01 · Lineage

Where the design comes from

The "Starrett" Last Word is a Cleveland design with Waltham watchmaking roots. Every instrument in this family — Lowe-marked, transition hybrid, or modern 711 — runs the same mechanism: a spiral (helical) groove cut into the pointer spindle, driven by a tooth on the stylus lever. No gear train. That single design decision explains both its low cost and its century-long reputation for stick-slip.

1883
John Logan, watchmaker of Waltham, MA, patents the first American dial indicator (granted May 15, 1883) — a plunger instrument transmitting motion via a fusee-style chain. Establishes the dial-readout concept; rack-and-pinion replaces the chain within ~15 years. Feeds the B.C. Ames lineage.
1890s
Lever-and-scale test indicators (Starrett No. 64 "Universal," Ideal, Gladwin) serve the test-indicator role with a bare pointer over a scratch scale — pure lever-ratio amplification, no dial. This is the product category the Last Word obsoletes.
1902
Henry A. Lowe, Waltham, MA, introduces his "Universal Test Indicator" — 6½" long, rear scale, stamped Patents Pending. Functionally the Last Word prototype.
1907
Lowe relocates to Cleveland, OH (1874 East 66th St.). Shortly after, the compact 2½" version appears: crystal-covered dial replaces the scale. The first true Last Word.
1914–15
Lowe files (Jun 25, 1914) and is granted (Jun 29, 1915) US 1,144,367 — the core mechanism patent, after ~13 years of "patents pending."
1919
Lowe files both remaining patents within six weeks: the round tubular body with reversing action (Feb 17) and the adjustable tool-post shank (Mar 31). Grants take 4–5 more years.
1923–24
US 1,466,664 (Sep 4, 1923) and US 1,486,908 (Mar 18, 1924) issue. The 1,466,664 architecture — tubular body, reversing switch, rotating bezel, friction clamp ring — is recognizably the modern 711.
1924–26
Lowe files a fourth patent (Jul 5, 1924): the detachable, infinitely adjustable contact armUS 1,585,778, granted May 25, 1926. Its live term (to May 1943) makes it the workhorse marking on early Starrett-era units.
1931
Lowe catalog shows Model C (.001", non-reversing), Model D-10 (.0001", 2" dial, Lowe name on face), Model F (cylindrical body, reversing).
1935
L. S. Starrett acquires the Last Word business of Henry A. Lowe Co., Cleveland, and moves the equipment to Athol, MA — a Depression-recovery acquisition (Starrett had only resumed dividends at the end of 1934). Lowe model letters survive as Starrett 711C / 711D-10 / 711F.
1936–37
Transition hybrids: Starrett-marked indicators in Lowe boxes; Lowe bodies with Starrett dial faces (old stock being used up). Frequently misread as mismatched parts — they are period-correct.
1940s–60s
The F-configuration becomes the Last Word. Shaded jig-borer dial, attachment ecosystem, jeweled lever marketing. Clones proliferate (Spot-On, Craftsman-branded). Legacy 711D still cataloged as late as Starrett Catalog No. 27 (1965).
1970s→
Design frozen. Modern 711FSZ-type units are the 1919/1923 Lowe architecture with a positive reversing switch and packaging updates. Swiss gear-train DTIs (Interapid, Compac, B&S BesTest, TESA) displace it at the quality end of the market.

Lowe's indicator patents — four known

All four are pre-1929 US patents and therefore public domain. PDF links go directly to the Google Patents scan of the original document. REV B correction: REV A declared three patents “complete” per DATAMP’s H. A. Lowe record; a fourth (US 1,585,778) surfaced via the patent stamp on an early Athol-production Starrett 711C, and the count is now stated as “known,” not exhaustive.

What it covers

  • The helix-and-tooth drive: a spindle carrying the pointer has a spiral groove cut into it; the long arm of the stylus lever carries a tooth riding in that groove. Lever arc → spindle rotation, with no gears. Claimed amplification: pointer motion 100× the stylus deflection.
  • Dial spec as patented: graduated 0–25, each division = .001" at the contact point.
  • Adjustable two-piece lever: the contact arm grips a tapered bushing friction-tight (slit-clamp), so the stylus can be swung to different angles relative to the body — the swiveling-contact behavior every Last Word owner knows.
  • Return system: fine spiral hairspring in an adjustable friction-fit spring barrel (pure watchmaking construction) returns the spindle; a separate leaf spring returns the lever. Single-direction action only — no reversing yet.
  • Mounting: threaded rear boss with hemispherical socket for a ball-ended tool-post shank; clamp accessory for surface-gage spindles; tapered hole in the stylus tip accepts a bent-wire point for small bores.
Collector significance: this is the patent behind the "Pat. June 29-15" stamp found on flat-body Lowe Model C and D-10 instruments. DATAMP records a Model C marked "Pat. June 29-15 / Others pending" with dial marked "Model-C 1"/1000 Last Word." The stick-slip failure mode you see on the bench today is inherent to claim 1: the tooth-in-helix interface is a sliding contact that gums with dried oil.

What it covers

  • The tubular body: claims an "integral tubular body having a tapered fore-end and a cylindrical portion" — the definitive round Last Word silhouette, unchanged to this day.
  • The reversing mechanism: a small rotating shaft carries a delicate wire spring threaded through a stud on the operating lever; flipping the external lever between two notch positions reverses which direction the spring biases the stylus. This is the ancestor of the modern 711's reversing switch, and the dial is graduated both ways from 0 to suit it.
  • Serrated stylus joint: the contact arm and lever arm mate through complementary annular radial serrations held by a spring latch — indexed, non-slip stylus angle adjustment, fixing the friction-joint drift problem of the 1915 design (the patent says so explicitly).
  • Rotating bezel: dial ring rides on a corrugated spring friction washer under a screwed-on bezel — the zero-set bezel, described in full watch-case vocabulary (bezel, crystal).
  • Rotatable clamp ring: a friction spring ring with threaded boss turns about the cylindrical body — the swiveling-body mounting versatility Starrett still advertises.
Collector significance: this single patent contains essentially the whole modern 711F feature set — filed in 1919. Lowe's round-body instruments (and the Lowe Model F of the 1931 catalog) embody it. When a listing shows a round-body "Lowe" with a reversing lever, this is the design; the practical machinist consensus that the round bodies stick more than the flat ones is folklore worth noting but not settled.

What it covers

  • A tool-post shank ending in spring clamping jaws with a longitudinal recess, holding a two-arm shank extension: two cylindrical arms pivoted together, one friction-fit in the jaws, with the indicator attachment rotatably clamped on the other arm.
  • In plain terms: the articulated snug/attachment hardware that lets the indicator body swing and clock into "an almost infinite number of positions" off a lathe tool post — the direct ancestor of the attachment kit that ships in every 711 "complete with attachments" set.
Collector significance: a complete vintage set is worth meaningfully more than a bare indicator, and this patent is why the attachments exist as a system rather than an afterthought. Filed six weeks after the round-body patent — Lowe was patenting the instrument and its fixturing as one product.

What it covers

  • A joint that is both detachable and infinitely adjustable: the contact arm seats on a shallow (~5°) conical boss coaxial with the pivot, retained by a spring clip — quick-change arms with stepless angular setting.
  • The specification explicitly critiques its two predecessors: the 1915 friction joint adjusts smoothly but cannot detach; the 1923 serrated joint detaches and locks positively but only in discrete tooth-steps. This patent resolves both — the direct ancestor of interchangeable 711 contact points.
  • Body stated as "identical in construction" to the US 1,466,664 round tubular housing.
Collector significance: the marking workhorse of early Starrett production. Because it was the only Lowe patent still live after the 1935 acquisition's early years (to May 1943), first-generation Athol instruments carry "PAT. NO. 1,585,778" alone — a tight late-'30s/early-'40s dating tell. Documented on an early Starrett 711C in this collection.

Known lookalikes: "Lowe of Cleveland"-marked single-direction unit with .050"/turn dial and a 1904 patent date (early variant/derivative); Spot-On and certain Craftsman-branded DTIs use the same helix-and-jewel architecture but are not Starrett production. Starrett kept Lowe's model letters, so a "Model F" reference in a 1931 Lowe catalog and a "711F" are the same configuration.
